Travel times between areas

How OffYaGo works out the journey from one area to the next, and what Routed, AI suggested and Estimate mean on a leg.

Between two areas of your trip, say Osaka to Kyoto or Tokyo to Hakone, the app shows a leg: how you travel and about how long it takes. Where that number came from decides how much to trust it, so every leg says so.

The three labels

LabelWhere the time came fromHow much to trust it
A real route measured by Apple Maps.The best the app has. Traffic and delays still apply.
AI suggestedAn AI's recall of how people usually make this journey. Premium with AI assistance on.A good starting point. It's from memory, not a live timetable, and it isn't a booking.
A rule of thumb from the distance between the two ends.The roughest. Check it before you rely on it.

What the AI adds

With AI assistance on, Auto-plan asks the AI about each journey between consecutive areas. When it answers, a leg can show:

  • the way travellers realistically make the journey: train, flight, ferry or road;
  • the airport or station actually used at each end;
  • operators that typically run it, and the typical time spent moving;
  • a short sentence from the AI, and whether the route runs only in some seasons.

It also gives a view on whether an area is worth the detour, and warns when a long airport run on the last night looks like a problem. If it judges an area isn't worth the trip, that area goes back to your saved places and you can add it back.

Recalled, not live

These times come from the AI's general knowledge. They aren't live schedules, fares or availability. Check timetables and book with the operator.

When it doesn't apply

  • A trip with a single area has no journey between areas, so nothing is asked.
  • If the AI doesn't answer, your phone's own estimates are used and the run says so: "Planned on this device — the AI step didn't answer this time."
  • The same route isn't asked twice. A saved answer is reused for up to 30 days.
